Roman Longginou, Artist portrait

Roman Longginou’s work explores connections between surface, reverence and the ‘ideal/ised’ image. Working primarily with charcoal, his realistic works on paper borrow from vanitas painting; contemplating contemporary symbols of idolatry, memento mori and the ephemeral. His work develops tension between objects of desire and their inevitable decay. Asking how the images we behold inform the images we make of ourselves.

Longginou holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours II) (Visual Arts) from the Queensland University of Technology. His solo exhibitions include ‘The Hypokritēs’, Belancē x Jerico Contemporary, Sydney (2022), ’Illusions of Grandeur’, Jerico Contemporary (2020), ’The Constructed Heroic', Innerspace Contemporary Art, Brisbane (2019), ‘Torn’ Red Sea Gallery, Brisbane (2017). His group exhibitions include ‘Brisbane Portrait Prize Travelling Showcase’ Brisbane (2023), ‘Burn’, The Side Gallery (2022), Precious Metals’, Jerico Contemporary (2021), 'Converge 1', The Side Gallery (Satellite Show) (2019). He won The Adelaide Perry Prize people’s choice award, Sydney (2023), The Sunshine Coast Art Prize people’s choice award, Caloundra (2022) and was a Finalist in The Brisbane Portrait Prize, Brisbane (2022), Paul Guest Prize, Bendigo (2020) and Fisher's Ghost Art Award, Campbelltown (2019, 2020, 2021 & 2022). His work has been featured in Tirade World, Monster Children and other lifestyle publications.
